Rainforest Unit: Sample Lesson Plan

Day #2 

 

ENGAGE: Teach the students the song, “Walk through the Rainforest.” (see attachment)

 

Reading: Read aloud, “A Walk in the Rainforest,” by Kristin Joy Pratt.

 

Journal Writing/Drawing: What would it be like to live in the rainforest?

 

Science: Layers of the Rainforest

 

          Objective: For students to learn new vocabulary and         characteristics of each layer of the rainforest.

 

          Materials: crayons, scissors, glue, construction paper, sections          of the rainforest.

 

          Procedure:

          Engage: Read the story above.

 

          Explore: Draw pictures of what you think the rainforest looks      like. Talk with small groups about what is in a rainforest, writing      down the group’s thoughts and questions. Students will        assemble the different layers of the rainforest predicting what ` animals they think live in each layer.

 

          Explain: Give students some references with facts about the     layers of the rainforest. Discuss what animals live in the      different layers of the rainforest.

 

          Elaborate: Students will be given the thematic project for this     unit. It will be to create a diorama of the rainforest with the        layers labeled. This project will be ongoing over the 10 day unit.     Each student will be given a rubric of what is expected.

 

Library: Students will have the opportunity to visit the library and do research on the rainforest.

 

Independent Reading: Students will have time to read or skim through some of the books they checked out from the library.
